Theodor von Hörmann (1840-1895)

 

Theodor von Hörmann was born 1840 in Imst in Tyrol, his full name was Theodor Hörmann von und zu Hörbach. He served as lieutenant in the imperial and royal army in the Sardinian War 1859 and in the German War 1866.

From 1873 to 1875 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in the class of Eduard Peithner Lichtenfels and Anselm Feuerbach. Hörmann teached free-style drawing and fencing at the military school in St. Pölten. 1884 he married Laura Bertuch, stopped his military service and focused on his art. He made some study trips and stayed in Paris from 1886-1890, where he studied the French Impressionism. From 1890 until 1893 Hörmann lived in Znaim, then he moved to Vienna. Hörmann was also a member of the Künstlerhaus in Vienna.

Theodor von Hörmann died 1895 in Graz during a journey to Italy.
