Welcome to the homepage of the artist Theodor von Hörmann!

Theodor von Hörmann is one of the most important Austrian landscape painters from the second half of the 19th century. His works are part of the Stimmungsimpressionismus (Austrian Mood Impressionism), which was a stylistic direction within the landscape art between 1870 and 1900 in Austria. The artists used to paint outside and tried to catch the atmosphere and light in the nature. But compared with the French impressionism the Austrian plen-air paintings basically are much more realistic.

Hörmann used strong colors for his landscapes and sometimes small groups of figures brighten up his compositions. Only after his death he was dignified and Hermann Bahr called him one of the "first Secessionist artists".
